Dominican Republic's president meets with Haiti's Martelly

President of the Dominican Republic Leonel Fernandez on Wednesday met with Haiti's President-elect Michel Martelly to discuss bilateral relations of the two countries that share the Hispaniola island in the Caribbean.

The meeting lasted two hours and was held just days before Martelly officially takes office as President of Haiti in an inauguration ceremony to be held on May 14.

Fernandez and Martelly also discussed topics related to migration and the common border the two island nations share but details of the talks were not released.

The meeting "served to strengthen the relations between both Caribbean countries," Martelly told reporters after meeting Fernandez, adding that the meeting visit represented "a visit of courtesy to improve and strengthen the relations between the Dominican Republic's president and the coming president of Haiti."

Martelly also said he has invited Fernandez to his inauguration ceremony and said his counterpart offered him "many suggestions" on how to administrate "having good relations" with other countries.

Martelly also thanked the Dominican Republic for the aid given after the earthquake of January 2010, which killed at least 250,000 people and initially left more than 1.6 million people homeless.
